Osmosis Ambassador Spotlight: Otto Shill, AZCOM at Midwestern University, MS2
Jan 26, 2014
Osmosis focuses on students and improving how we learn, relying on feedback for our app and web platform. We would not be able to offer our product without the help and input of medical students. We have composed a group of volunteers to join our Osmosis Ambassador program to test and share Osmosis to fellow students who can benefit. We want you to get to know the people behind Osmosis, so let us introduce Otto Shill, Osmosis Ambassador.
When did you decide you wanted to be a doctor?
I have been interested in medicine since I was a young boy. My grandfather was a physician, and I found his work very inspiring. Initially, I chose to follow other interests in business and entrepreneurship.
Along the way, I met and fell in love with my wife, Emily, an ICU nurse. Spending time with her on the unit, and later shadowing the ICU physicians, I became convinced that studying medicine would be an important next step in my career path.
Medicine gives me the opportunity to have a substantial and direct impact on people's lives in ways that I could not while working in marketing.
What has been the most enjoyable part of medical school?
I love the integration. Bringing everything together to understand the incredible interactions of the body systems is exciting.
Do you have an interest in a specific specialty?
I have broad interest in a number of different fields. I am looking forward to rotations so I can hone in and determine what type of medicine I want to practice in the long term.
How did you find out about Osmosis?
On our class Facebook page.
What do you like most about learning by Osmosis?
Osmosis allows me to efficiently sneak in some study questions when I have a few minutes during the day. I find that I remember the concepts when they come up in class and on exams because I am constantly learning. Plus, if I see a question two or three times, I start to remember those concepts with a "patient" feel to them. That lets me apply the concepts to a clinical scenario presented in another context. Remember the excitement I feel for integrating concepts? This is it.
Why did you decide to become an Osmosis Ambassador?
I want my fellow students to know about the best ways to simplify their learning and prepare for the board exams. Osmosis is one of my favorite ways to do that.
