Whether the catalyst was an <strong>infectious disease outbreak, <\/strong>a<strong> major guideline update, <\/strong>a<strong> healthcare policy shift, <\/strong>or a<strong> scientific breakthrough<\/strong>, learners consistently visited Osmosis seeking answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While a page visit can&#8217;t tell us <em>exactly<\/em> why someone arrived, the patterns we observed suggest that <strong>key healthcare events <\/strong>may influence what healthcare professionals choose to learn. Please note that for this analysis, \u201c<strong>learner activity<\/strong>\u201d refers to visits to educational content on the <strong>Osmosis platform<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When healthcare changes direction, learning follows.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Outbreaks_Happen_Osmosis_Learners_Follow\"><\/span>When Outbreaks Happen, Osmosis Learners Follow<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early <strong>2026, tuberculosis<\/strong> unexpectedly returned to the headlines. A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kdhe.ks.gov\/2242\/Tuberculosis-Outbreak\">high-profile outbreak in the Kansas City<\/a> area<\/strong> sparked <strong>national coverage<\/strong> and renewed discussion about a disease that, while often overlooked in the <strong>US<\/strong>, continues to affect <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/32\/3\/26-0264_article\"><strong>millions of people worldwide<\/strong><\/a> each year. As the story unfolded, healthcare professionals, educators, and learners were once again confronted with questions about <strong>transmission, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During that period, <strong>tuberculosis-related learning activity<\/strong> on Osmosis increased by <strong>54 times the norm<\/strong>. At the height of the surge, our <strong>TB-focused learning content<\/strong> attracted <strong>more than 4,000 learner visits in a single day<\/strong><em>.<\/em><br><br>A similar pattern appeared in <strong>2025<\/strong>. What began as <strong>local outbreak coverage<\/strong> quickly became a broader <strong>public-health story<\/strong> when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contagionlive.com\/view\/hepatitis-a-outbreak-declared-in-los-angeles-county\"><strong>Los Angeles County<\/strong> launched a <strong>Hepatitis A response team<\/strong><\/a> while <strong>federal officials<\/strong> simultaneously investigated a separate <strong>multistate outbreak<\/strong> linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/alerts-advisories-safety-information\/safety-alert-hepatitis-virus-concha-negra-black-shell-shell-meat-april-2026\"><strong>contaminated food products<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, these events brought renewed attention to questions about <strong>transmission, vaccination, and prevention<\/strong>, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/learn\/Hepatitis\">Hepatitis A<\/a>-related learning activity<\/strong> increasing <strong>261 times<\/strong> its typical level on the <strong>Osmosis platform<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Guidelines_Dont_Just_Change_Healthcare_Practice_They_Change_Learning\"><\/span>Guidelines Don&#8217;t Just Change Healthcare Practice. They Change Learning.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>November 2025<\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/site.thoracic.org\/\">American Thoracic Society<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idsociety.org\/\">Infectious Diseases Society of America<\/a><\/strong> released their first <strong>major <a href=\"https:\/\/site.thoracic.org\/press-releases\/treatment-with-antibiotics-and-steroids-in-adults-with-pneumonia-addressed-in-latest-clinical-practice-guideline\">pneumonia guideline update<\/a><\/strong> since <strong>2019<\/strong>. The update addressed topics clinicians encounter every day, including <strong>antibiotic selection<\/strong>, <strong>treatment duration<\/strong>, and <strong>respiratory care<\/strong>, making it one of the most consequential <strong>respiratory-care updates<\/strong> in years. In the weeks that followed, <strong>respiratory-related learning activity<\/strong> on <strong>Osmosis<\/strong> increased by <strong>as much as 359-fold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The pattern suggests that when recommendations change, clinicians and students often return to foundational resources to understand not only <em>what<\/em> <a>changed<\/a>, but <em>why<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_does_this_happen\"><\/span>Why does this happen?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Healthcare information<\/strong> spreads through <strong>news coverage<\/strong>, <strong>journals<\/strong>, <strong>professional societies<\/strong>, <strong>educators<\/strong>, <strong>social media<\/strong>, <strong>newsletters<\/strong>, <strong>institutional guidance<\/strong>, and <strong>peer discussions<\/strong>. Hospitals, <strong>nursing organizations<\/strong>, and <strong>healthcare leaders<\/strong> began preparing for the expiration of <strong>emergency-era waivers<\/strong>, updated <strong>documentation requirements<\/strong>, and shifts in <strong>care-delivery policies<\/strong> that had been in place for <strong>more than 3 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <strong>April 5, 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/learn\/COVID-19:_Nursing\">COVID-related nursing content<\/a><\/strong> on <strong>Osmosis <\/strong>received <strong>4,957 views in a single day<\/strong>, which was the largest surge observed in our analysis.
