As many medical students know, Match Week is a grueling process consisting of a lot of&#8230;waiting. This is a time that truly tests one\u2019s patience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To understand SOAP and why you should care, let\u2019s start at the beginning&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Road to Residency\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8HlFgyItwXk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_NRMP%C2%AE_Match\"><\/span>What is the NRMP\u00ae Match?&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Main Residency Match<\/strong>\u00ae is a process of \u201cmatching\u201d <strong>medical student<\/strong> applicants with <strong>residency programs<\/strong> and spans from June to the following March of every year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a high-level overview of this year\u2019s Match timeline:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>June 4, 2025:<\/strong> Applicants <strong>start registering on <a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/applying-residency\/article\/register-myeras-residency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MyERAS\u00ae<\/a> <\/strong>and filling out their applications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>September 3, 2025:<\/strong> Applicants may begin <strong>submitting applications to residency programs<\/strong> at 9 AM ET.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>October 2025 \u2013 January\/February 2026:<\/strong> Applicants <strong>interview with prospective programs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 4, 2026 (by 9:00 PM ET):<\/strong> Deadline to <strong>certify <a href=\"https:\/\/r3.nrmp.org\/viewLoginPage\">Rank Order Lists<\/a><\/strong> and final match withdrawal \/ late registration window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 16, 2026 (10:00 AM ET):<\/strong> Applicants <strong>receive emails<\/strong> indicating their match status (and SOAP eligibility). <strong>SOAP opens immediately.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 17, 2026 (8:00 AM ET):<\/strong> Programs <strong>begin reviewing<\/strong> SOAP applications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 19, 2026: <\/strong>SOAP rounds occur (Round 1: 9:00\u201311:00 a.m. ET; Round 2: 12:00\u20132:00 p.m. ET; Round 3: 3:00\u20135:00 p.m. ET; Round 4: 6:00\u20138:00 p.m. ET). SOAP ends at 9:00<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 20, 2026 (12:00 p.m. ET):<\/strong> Match Day, when applicants <strong>learn which programs<\/strong> they matched into.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"I_didnt_match_What_should_I_do\"><\/span>I didn\u2019t match. What should I do?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you receive a report that you are a partially or fully \u201c<strong>unmatched applicant<\/strong>\u201d, <strong>do not despair<\/strong>! The Friday before Match Week, be prepared just in case by checking if you\u2019re eligible to participate in SOAP\u00ae.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SOAP eligibility means:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are registered for the <strong>Main Residency Match<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are eligible to <strong>graduate medical education (GME)<\/strong> on July 1.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are <strong>partially matched <\/strong>or <strong>fully unmatched <\/strong>on <strong>Monday <\/strong>of Match Week.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_SOAP\"><\/span>What is SOAP?&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SOAP is an opportunity for unmatched applicants to try to obtain an <strong>unfilled residency position<\/strong>. It consists of <strong>four rounds<\/strong>, each lasting <strong>two hours<\/strong>, during which unmatched candidates can <strong>reject or accept any offer<\/strong> you may receive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every residency program is filled using the Match algorithm, so many programs choose to participate in SOAP. The NRMP will have a <strong>list of programs<\/strong> that you are eligible to apply to. You can complete as many as <strong>45 applications in each round<\/strong> using AAMC\u2019s ERAS. Programs will choose which applicants to <strong>interview <\/strong>and will <strong>send notifications<\/strong> by phone or email. Interviews will typically be done <strong>by phone<\/strong>, but programs can set their own process for interviewing applicants.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to note that <strong>applicants cannot contact any program<\/strong> unless the program initiates contact first. Applicants learn if they matched (by email and R3 System). SOAP-eligible unmatched and partially-matched applicants can access the list of unfulfilled programs in the R3 System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10 AM EST:<\/strong>&nbsp;AAMC ERAS opens SOAP application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TUESDAY\"><\/span>TUESDAY<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>8 AM EST:<\/strong> AAMC ERAS opens the Program Directors Work Station (PDWS) for programs to begin reviewing SOAP applications. Programs may contact applicants upon receipt of an application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>11:30 AM EST:<\/strong> Programs may begin creating SOAP preference lists in the R3 System (applicants do not submit a preference list for SOAP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"WEDNESDAY\"><\/span>WEDNESDAY<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Programs review applications in PDWS, conduct interviews and create\/certify SOAP preference lists in the R3 Systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"I_did_not_receive_an_offer_during_SOAP_What_now\"><\/span>I did not receive an offer during SOAP. What now?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will be programs that remain unfilled after the Match. Once SOAP ends, the NRMP will release a <strong>final list of unfilled programs<\/strong>, which you can contact directly to inquire about their unfilled positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you still don\u2019t match, you have several options to <strong>improve your application chances<\/strong> for Match Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Regroup_Reassess_and_Rewrite_Your_Personal_Statement\"><\/span>Regroup, Reassess, and Rewrite Your Personal Statement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look back on the application process and try to <strong>identify where things went wrong<\/strong>. Could you have been <strong>better prepared<\/strong> for your interviews? How was your <strong>USMLE\u00ae Step 1 score<\/strong>? Did you limit yourself <strong>geographically <\/strong>or focus too intently on one specialty, narrowing your options?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of these questions have resolutions; others do not. When rewriting your personal statement next year, make sure to <strong>address your weaknesses head-on<\/strong>. You can <strong>scribe for a doctor<\/strong> or <strong>reach out to your network<\/strong> to see if there are any <strong>research opportunities<\/strong> you can pursue\u2014involvement in research can be a huge boost to your future applications.
