Panicking, she copies the results from a prior exam, and tells Dr. Sutton that the exam went well. A few months pass, and it turns out Dr. Sutton has a <strong>large\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/learn\/Uterine_fibroid\">uterine fibroid<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that means she has to cancel her fertility treatments. The Internist: Zach Hoover\u2019s \u201cHyperkalemia\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zach Hoover visits Dr. Tia Pearson after experiencing <strong>progressive weakness<\/strong> in his legs. During his <strong>patient history<\/strong>, Dr. Pearson notices nothing specific, so she orders a <strong>lab test<\/strong>. The results indicate that Zach has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/learn\/Clinical_Reasoning:_Hyperkalemia\"><strong>hyperkalemia<\/strong><\/a>\u2014high potassium levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zach is admitted to the hospital. In a few hours, another doctor, Dr. Carr, orders a second set of lab results, which come back <strong>normal<\/strong>. He\u2019s confused, but decides to <strong>stop Zach\u2019s medications.<\/strong> Dr. Carr checks in with the lab, and finds they have made a mistake. In fact, according to the lab results, Zach never had hyperkalemia! Because everything looks normal, Zach is sent home. Dr. Carr\u00a0<strong>does not report the error.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That night, another patient in the hospital, Melina Sanchez, has a <strong>cardiac arrhythmia<\/strong>. She was being treated for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/learn\/High_Yield:_Renal_failure\"><strong>renal failure<\/strong><\/a>, and her <strong>potassium<\/strong> level was increasing. As it turns out, <strong>the lab had accidentally switched<\/strong> Melina and Zach\u2019s <strong>blood samples<\/strong>. Melina was the one who had hyperkalemia, not Zach, but he was the one being treated for the condition!
