If you\u2019re like second-year medical student Jannel Lawrence, you\u2019re looking for ways to stay active during these breathers. In this article, Jannel discusses her six tips for keeping the momentum going during the summer.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a second-year medical student, I often find it difficult to do anything besides study. During breaks from school, I try to engage myself in something that is both beneficial and enjoyable. The length of breaks during medical school varies in terms of the curriculum and also on the school\u2019s location. Below are some of the ways that I have managed to stay productive during breaks from school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Learn_something_new\"><\/span>1. Learn something new<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is said that a good hobby can also be a good stress reliever. Opportunities are all around us, and it is up to us to make use of them. You can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/what-is-intersectional-healthcare-and-why-is-it-important\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learn a new language<\/a>, a new skill, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/01\/14\/how-to-meal-plan-in-medical-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experiment with various recipes in the kitchen<\/a>. Learning something new is a great way to gain a sense of accomplishment, and it also helps to build self-confidence, because you will now have the ability to tackle new tasks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Create_a_blog_or_contribute_to_one\"><\/span>2. Create a blog (or contribute to one!)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you enjoy writing and have the ability to organize your thoughts, this can be a great way to occupy your free time away from school. Creating a blog can be the avenue whereby you can showcase your writing skills, and it can be an excellent way by which students can learn from each other. A blog can be a place through which you can share your educational journey with other aspiring medical students, who may need some guidance. Enroll in an online course&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are someone who believes in learning something new every day, then completing a short online course on a topic that you find interesting is something that you will enjoy. Aside from my medical coursework, I have found the time to complete a basic life support and first aid\/CPR course offered by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nhcps.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Health Service provider solutions<\/a>&nbsp;and a few health-based short courses with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edx.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">edX<\/a>. The length of the courses on edX runs as short as two weeks to as much as 12 weeks. Because the majority of the online courses are self-paced, you can even complete them in a couple of days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/https\/\/university.osmosis.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"701\" height=\"251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_bb489d.png\" alt=\"Learn easily in Medical School through Osmosis\" class=\"wp-image-2593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_bb489d.png 701w, https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_bb489d.png?resize=300,107 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/https\/\/university.osmosis.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Join_a_professional_organization\"><\/span>4. Join a professional organization<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since becoming a medical student, I have been able to join some organizations\u2014many of which are specific to specialties in internal medicine, which is the specialty that I am passionate about pursuing. There are many professional organizations in various specialties that students can join, such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acponline.org\/membership\/medical-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American College of Physicians<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsa.org\/members\/#1508265838785-280416b2-ebb1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Medical Students Organization<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/membership\/join-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American College of Cardiology<\/a>, amongst others. Many medical organizations offer free membership to students, which eliminates the issue of cost as a deciding factor when joining.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By joining professional medical organizations, I was able to become exposed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/03\/10\/how-to-build-an-outstanding-curriculum-vitae-during-medical-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple opportunities<\/a>, such as becoming a part of student leadership groups, obtaining discounted prices at national conferences, gaining mentorship, getting the opportunity to participate in abstract competitions, and networking with other medical professionals. Review content from a previous semester&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a second-year medical student who is currently in their fourth semester of basic sciences, I often tend to forget the material learned from previous semesters\u2014especially from semesters one and two. For those who absolutely enjoy studying and can\u2019t help but continue during a break, then it can thus prove to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/06\/01\/the-dos-and-donts-of-summer-studying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the perfect time to review material<\/a>&nbsp;that was taught during earlier semesters, which will certainly show up on board exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Volunteer_for_a_cause_you_care_about\"><\/span>6. Volunteer for a cause you care about&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of us choose the medical profession because we want to make a difference in someone else\u2019s life and volunteering is a great way to do so. It not only proves that you\u2019re committed to a cause, but it can also be a way to boost your leadership skills. Those who can\u2019t find the time to volunteer with a local agency or abroad can also consider virtual volunteering with agencies such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlinevolunteering.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides those that I have listed, there are many more ways that you can keep yourself occupied during breaks. Doing something besides studying is not only good for your mental health but also your physical well-being.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Jannel&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jannel Lawrence is a second-year medical student at Ross University School of Medicine who is originally from Dominica and a graduate of the Osmosis Medical Education Fellowship program.
