By 2030, we need to train 35 million additional health professionals to keep up with the demands of our rapidly aging population.&nbsp;This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/03\/15\/covid19-as-a-catalyst-for-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">need has been accelerated<\/a>&nbsp;by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which threatens the lives of millions globally.&nbsp;The general strategy most countries are adopting to fight the coronavirus is to #FlattenTheCurve by practicing social distancing and reducing the number of cases healthcare systems have to deal with at any one time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Osmosis, we\u2019re asking people to reach further and do their part to&nbsp;<strong>#RaiseTheLine<\/strong>&nbsp;by increasing the threshold of our healthcare system. Together, we can achieve this by training more health professionals and empowering existing healthcare workers to provide the best care possible in the safest possible environment. This is \u201craising the line\u201d of our healthcare capacity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_can_healthcare_systems_RaiseTheLine\"><\/span>How can healthcare systems #RaiseTheLine?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When there\u2019s a surge in demand for medical treatment, like during a pandemic, hospitals need to increase the number of available beds and staffing by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canceling elective procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Figuring out ways to offer patients online health education opportunities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diagnose and treat patients outside the hospital with home care and telemedicine whenever possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discharging healthy patients as quickly as possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, within hospitals, every effort is made to keep patients with COVID-19 separate from patients who are hospitalized for other reasons in order to avoid intra-hospital spread. To keep clinicians safe, they should wear personal protective equipment like N95 masks. Because of panic-buying and hoarding, these masks are in short supply, so it\u2019s incredibly important that they\u2019re only being used by healthcare providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many healthcare workers are currently being retrained to use equipment like ventilators that they wouldn\u2019t normally use in their day-to-day clinical practice. We\u2019ve put together a few tips on things you can do to help all of your classmates get through their education and into the workforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Continue_studying_in_quarantine\"><\/span>Continue studying in quarantine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being in social isolation or quarantine doesn\u2019t mean you need to stop studying. In fact, there\u2019s never been a better time to hit the books. There are a plethora of online resources you can use to keep up the momentum and work towards your degree in the health professions. You\u2019ll find that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/03\/19\/maintaining-mental-balance-while-practicing-social-distancing\">sticking to your normal study routine<\/a>&nbsp;is an excellent way to pass the time and retain a degree of normalcy during these challenging times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Support_your_faculty_as_they_move_classes_online\"><\/span>Support your faculty as they move classes online<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although classes are canceled, many institutions are working to transition scheduled lectures into an online environment. For many instructors, this is an unprecedented and highly challenging situation. To help them adjust, consider reaching out to an instructor and asking how you can help, whether it\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/03\/11\/supporting-your-students-with-digital-medical-education-resources\">suggesting online resources<\/a>, working with them to update course slides, or assisting them with uploading documents and brainstorming ways to help keep your class engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reach_out_to_your_classmates_from_a_safe_distance\"><\/span>Reach out to your classmates (from a safe distance)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, you and your classmates are in this together\u2014even though you\u2019re apart. Form a study group and work together via Zoom. Share online resources with each other. Use Workspaces on Osmosis.
