Students using outlining say it helped <strong>reduce the time for taking, editing, and reviewing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To use the outlining method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write every information piece as a <strong>bullet point<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>headings and subheadings<\/strong> to break up bullet points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add the most important points farther to the right and define the <strong>level of importance<\/strong> with various distances from the left margin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To study with the outlining method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write a <strong>short summary<\/strong> of the lecture before the text<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add <strong>keywords and cue words<\/strong> to every section for easier information search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connect related ideas by <strong>highlighting them in the same color.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe outlining method works best for students in the case of \u2018slow\u2019 and \u2018medium-speed\u2019 lectures,\u201d<\/strong> shares Brian Newton, a healthcare writer. <strong>\u201cIf a professor speaks very fast and introduces many concepts at once, then writing with another method is a better idea.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Use_the_Mapping_Method\"><\/span>4. Use the Mapping Method<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ve probably heard about an approach called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2019\/06\/14\/whats-a-mind-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>mind mapping<\/strong><\/a>. This one uses the same principles to take notes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mapping<\/strong> is a note-taking method that relates each idea to another idea. A student starts with the <strong>main idea of the lecture<\/strong> and expands it by connecting with other ones. The result is a <strong>graphic representation<\/strong> of lecture content, easy to scan and understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are two examples of maps from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6145636\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>this study on instructor-provided notes<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in medical education. The left one is a part of professor-issued guided notes on the anatomy of the middle ear. The right one was written by a student and contains much more information.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note how the student used <strong>different colors; another technique to categorize the content.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"732\" height=\"492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/student-notes.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/student-notes.jpg 732w, https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/student-notes.jpg?resize=300,202 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMapping works especially well for students who are visual learners,\u201d<\/strong> says Jessie Zadorsky, a healthcare writer. <strong>\u201cIt improves writing structure, which also makes it effective for planning essays and research papers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, as these two examples showed, <strong>mapping gives a visual overview of lecture material.<\/strong> By forcing students to create a new or expand an existing map, it actively engages the brain by making them think about content organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical students can create maps both by hand and with <strong>digital resources.<\/strong> If you decide to try the digital way, there are many <strong>free mind mapping apps<\/strong> out there to use.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Try_the_Cornell_Method\"><\/span>5. Try the Cornell Method<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this very popular note-taking method, <strong>separate a sheet of paper into three areas.<\/strong> Draw a line down the left page side to create a <strong>2.5-inch margin on the left.<\/strong> The larger section on the right will be the <strong>note-taking area.<\/strong> The smaller left one is where you\u2019ll make <strong>labels to differentiate specific topics.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third section is a <strong>summary of your thoughts and comments.<\/strong> It is supposed to be at the very bottom of every topic section. You\u2019ll be using them to <strong>scan through your notes quickly<\/strong> and find specific information pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, try to write a new <strong>cue for every subtopic<\/strong> or information area in the left column to introduce the notes in the right one. This means skipping a few lines and starting with a new cue and notes when a professor moves to a new point.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With those <strong>cues and keywords<\/strong>, you\u2019ll get yourself serviceable notes. For example, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/learn\/Acute_respiratory_distress_syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>lecture about Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0might contain cues like definitions, treatment methods, symptoms, and so on.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Highlight_Text_in_Different_Colors\"><\/span>6. Highlight Text in Different Colors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Highlighting passages<\/strong> while taking notes is a good strategy to <strong>differentiate content sections.<\/strong> But in some cases, students end up highlighting most of their notes (just look at any medical student&#8217;s copy of <em>First Aid!<\/em>). Later, finding the most important information becomes more difficult because <strong>if you highlight everything, you highlight nothing.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make learning and note-taking more effective, try to <strong>keep highlighting in different colors.<\/strong> This way, you\u2019ll make it easier to find a specific section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re writing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/learn\/Diabetes_mellitus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>diabetes notes<\/strong><\/a>, consider using these colors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yellow<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; definitions, e.g.,&nbsp;<em>\u201cType 2 Diabetes is a form of diabetes characterized by insulin resistance, high blood sugar, and low insulin&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Orange<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; locations, e.g.,&nbsp;<em>\u201cThyroid gland is located at the base of your neck&#8230;\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purple<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; pathophysiology, e.g.,&nbsp;<em>\u201cType 2 diabetes is caused by an imbalance between the demand and production of insulin&#8230;\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Green<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; mechanism of action, e.g.,&nbsp;<em>\u201cMetformin lowers blood glucose concentrations by decreasing its production and increasing peripheral glucose uptake and use.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pink<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; treatment, e.g.,&nbsp;<em>\u201cType 2 diabetes patients can control their blood sugar with a healthy diet and exercise&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This strategy works for both <strong>handwritten and electronic notes<\/strong> and can help to <strong>organize your notes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Final_Thoughts\"><\/span>Final Thoughts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s so much to learn in nursing school, so finding an <strong>effective note-taking method<\/strong> is a good idea.
