Managing your emotional intelligence will help you control and properly express your emotions during high-pressure situations. Learn how to hone your emotional intelligence with these tips from Osmosis Medical Education Fellow Mohamed Aldalou.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually, when we hear the word &#8220;intelligence,&#8221; many of us immediately associate it in terms of extensive scientific knowledge and the perusal of topics like physics, logic, and science. However, there&#8217;s another aspect of intelligence that&#8217;s often completely overlooked:\u00a0<strong>emotional intelligence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emotions are a very valuable tool to orient your decision-making process. They are stigmatized as being in opposition to rational and objective thinking, which is totally untrue. In fact, emotions are just another way of thinking; our minds have evolved through practice and experience to better adapt to our surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being involved in the medical field means experiencing a huge spectrum of emotions on a daily basis, as we are exposed to a whole manner of challenging situations. Sometimes, emotions can even be obstacles to our clinical career, as my colleague Aylin Canik mentioned in her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/10\/31\/overcoming-my-fear-of-blood-as-a-med-student\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blog regarding her fear of blood<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the four basic pillars that make up our emotional intelligence. Being aware of them will assist you in controlling and appropriately signaling your emotions in daily life and your medical career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_7ab5c0.png?w=700\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_7ab5c0.png 700w, https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_7ab5c0.png?resize=300,107 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Improve_Your_Emotional_Intelligence_by_Practicing_Self-Awareness\"><\/span>Improve Your Emotional Intelligence by Practicing Self-Awareness\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be aware of your emotions and give them the attention they deserve! Better insights into your emotions can really help you to understand yourself and others. There are two main components to emotions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<strong>psychological<\/strong>&nbsp;component (attitudes, thoughts, beliefs)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>physical<\/strong>\u00a0component (bodily sensations such as fluttery feeling in the stomach, numbness of the fingers)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you experience a strong emotion, step back and ask yourself, \u201cWhat am I feeling? What am I thinking of? What are the apparent physical sensations?\u201d Observing the emotion and\u00a0<strong>being self-aware<\/strong>\u00a0will help you better label it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2021\/01\/18\/5-mindfulness-tips-to-find-balance-in-2021\">Labeling and being aware of your emotional states<\/a>\u00a0will help you to manage those feelings. This is easier said than done. You need steady practice and time to be able to truly regulate your response to your emotions. The more emotionally intelligent you become, the better you will be at deciding how to\u00a0<strong>self-regulate<\/strong>\u00a0and best respond to your emotions.<br><br>There is no fixed pattern in this regard, and there are many different strategies to respond to a particular emotion depending on the situation and the personality. Some include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid triggers like people, environments, or situations that provoke negative emotions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/03\/19\/maintaining-mental-balance-while-practicing-social-distancing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Channel your emotions in a new constructive way<\/a>, such as running, exercising, reading, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/narrative-medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek out experiences that have a positive impact on your emotional state (music, movies, games)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Sit and passively observe your emotions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you know how to get started regulating your emotions, let\u2019s look at the next step: practicing empathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" src=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/medical-student-channeling-her-emotions-through-drawing.png\" alt=\"A medical student channeling her emotions through drawing.\" class=\"wp-image-3535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/medical-student-channeling-her-emotions-through-drawing.png 700w, https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/medical-student-channeling-her-emotions-through-drawing.png?resize=300,200 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Improve_Your_Emotional_Intelligence_by_Practicing_Empathy\"><\/span>Improve Your Emotional Intelligence by Practicing\u00a0Empathy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be emotionally intelligent, you need not only to understand your feelings but to understand the emotions of others. These two skills improve conjointly, overlapping, and intersecting in what we call\u00a0<strong>empathy<\/strong>.<br><br>Empathy is the ability to perceive situations from another person\u2019s perspective. When you\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/05\/15\/why-you-should-stop-practicing-empathy-and-start-feeling-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">practice empathy<\/a>, you\u2019re taking into account another\u2019s emotions and feelings about an experience they have had. You must pay attention to the person\u2019s expressions and the way they communicate verbally and non-verbally to actively learn about their inner thoughts and feelings. It\u2019s essentially based on making inferences about people\u2019s internal worlds based on their external actions\u2014you could think of it as a little like \u201cmind reading!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always try to ask yourself, \u201cWhat is this person thinking? What are they feeling? Being socially adept and aware means you know how your actions can affect another\u2019s emotions, and it also means you\u2019re better at responding to them.\u00a0<br><br>A lot of our emotions are derived from a social context\u2014for example, love, rejection, and embarrassment rarely exist outside the context of our relations with others. Healthy relationships are built on a mutual affinity where people are attuned to each other\u2019s emotions and are able to respond to them appropriately.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Actions that elicit negative emotions can directly harm relationships and damage your overall ability to connect with others in a meaningful way. Positive emotions, on the other hand, are the key to forming strong, long-lasting bonds with others, from your friends to your colleagues and even with your long-term patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the day, we are all affected by other people&#8217;s emotions, just as our emotions affect others.
