Find out if you&#8217;re <strong>eligible<\/strong> and what&#8217;s required to take <strong>Step 1<\/strong>, including <strong>how to apply<\/strong>, the <strong>costs and fees<\/strong>, and <strong>how long it will take to receive your score<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"USMLE_Step_1_Exam_Dates\"><\/span>USMLE&nbsp;Step 1 Exam Dates<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, determine your <strong>availability<\/strong>. You&#8217;ll need to provide a <strong>three-month period of eligibility<\/strong> to take Step 1 through the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecfmg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ECFMG&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/secure2.ecfmg.org\/emain.asp?app=iwa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Interactive Web Applications<\/a>\u00a0(IWA)<\/strong>. Each eligibility period will have a wide selection of <strong>test dates<\/strong> you can choose from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t wait to <strong>schedule a date<\/strong>, and make sure to <strong>plan ahead!<\/strong> The <strong>test slots fill up quickly<\/strong>, and as a result, not every date will be available. Make sure to <strong>apply as soon as possible<\/strong> to take Step 1 before the start of next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>TIP:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0our <strong>exam date cannot be scheduled<\/strong> on major holidays or during the first week of January.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_is_eligible_to_take_the_USMLE_Step_1_Exam\"><\/span>Who is eligible to take the USMLE Step 1 Exam?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before applying to take Step 1, you&#8217;ll need to find out you&#8217;re\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfmg.org\/certification\/eligibility-for-examination.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>eligible<\/strong><\/a>. Also note that if your <strong>eligibility period extends into the next year<\/strong>, you should review information for that year as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/iwa2.ecfmg.org\/instruct.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">application instructions<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apply for Step 1 using the <strong>ECFMG&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/secure2.ecfmg.org\/emain.asp?app=iwa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Interactive Web Applications<\/a> (IWA)<\/strong> page. Log into your account and <strong>complete the application<\/strong>, making sure to select a <strong>three-month eligibility period<\/strong> for the exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the <strong>ECFMG verifies your eligibility<\/strong>, they will issue a <strong>scheduling permit<\/strong> to you, and you can <strong>schedule your testing appointment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>TIP:<\/strong> Remember to select a date that falls within your <strong>previously chosen eligibility period<\/strong>, or you&#8217;ll have to <strong>reapply!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Costs_and_Fees_Associated_with_the_USMLE_Step_1_Exam\"><\/span>Costs and Fees Associated with the USMLE Step 1 Exam<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Budgeting is essential<\/strong> to scheduling your board exams, as you must pay all applicable <strong>fees<\/strong> by the time you apply. Here are the <strong>costs<\/strong> you should be aware of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before applying for Step 1, you must apply for <strong>ECFMG certification<\/strong>, which costs <strong>$560<\/strong> (as of 2025).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The examination fee for Step 1 is $1020 and <strong>does not include<\/strong> the <strong>surcharge <\/strong>if you&#8217;re <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfmg.org\/fees\/usmle-surcharge.html\">testing outside U.S.\/Canada<\/a><\/strong>, which adds $<strong>205<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_long_will_it_take_to_get_my_USMLE_Step_1_exam_results\"><\/span>How long will it take to get my USMLE Step 1 exam results?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>USMLE Step 1 score dates<\/strong> are usually released about a <strong>month after you take the exam<\/strong>. There may be <strong>unexpected delays<\/strong>, so do your best to be <strong>patient<\/strong> and allow up to <strong>eight weeks<\/strong> to receive your results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> You will receive an <strong>email when your Step 1 exam score is available<\/strong>.
