Technology is no longer a supplement to nursing education; it&#8217;s a cornerstone. From artificial intelligence (AI)-powered simulations to mobile-first learning platforms, digital tools are reshaping how we teach, learn, and connect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with innovation comes the responsibility to ensure that these tools are not only effective but also inclusive, accessible, and grounded in sound pedagogy. In this article, I&#8217;ll share how faculty embraced technology at Saint Joseph&#8217;s University to enhance engagement, improve outcomes, and prepare both nurse practitioners and registered nurses for the realities of modern healthcare. From AI microcredentials to simulated EMRs, I&#8217;ll walk through the strategies we&#8217;ve implemented to make digital learning meaningful, equitable, and practice-ready.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Designing_Education_for_Engagement_and_Equity\"><\/span>Designing Education for Engagement and Equity\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a Director of Nursing Education, I&#8217;ve witnessed firsthand how technology can enhance engagement, improve outcomes, and foster deeper clinical reasoning. Yet, I&#8217;ve also seen how it can overwhelm faculty, widen equity gaps, or fall flat without thoughtful integration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nurse practitioner (NP) program at Saint Joseph&#8217;s University is fully online for didactic coursework, with clinicals held on site. This hybrid structure requires intentional instructional design to make asynchronous learning just as engaging and rigorous as in-person instruction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To guide course development, faculty used the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qualitymatters.org\/qa-resources\/rubric-standards\/higher-ed-rubric\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quality Matters Course Design Rubric\u202f<\/a>\u202fand embedded multimedia content in each weekly module. A typical week includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A short <a href=\"https:\/\/educators.osmosis.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Osmosis video<\/a> reinforcing pathophysiology or pharmacology concepts\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A narrated PowerPoint\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A self-check quiz or interactive case scenario\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Links to readings and evidence-based guidelines\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optional discussion prompts or journal reflections\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This combination of resources supports multimedia learning, which engages multiple cognitive channels and improves long-term retention.&nbsp; Faculty found that applying <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/udlguidelines.cast.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Guideline<\/a> principles\u2014offering multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression\u2014makes the learning experience more inclusive and impactful for all students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Simulating_Clinical_Practice_in_a_Digital_World\"><\/span>Simulating Clinical Practice in a Digital World\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the challenges in an online program is incorporating simulation. We addressed this by building a telehealth simulation assignment. Students conduct a virtual visit using real telehealth software, assess and diagnose a simulated patient, and document their findings in a Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan (SOAP) note format.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The activity is scaffolded with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edhub.ama-assn.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Medical Association\u202f<\/a> modules and aligned with real-world practice expectations, reinforcing communication, documentation, and clinical decision-making in remote care settings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Building_AI_Fluency_with_the_AI_CARES_Model\"><\/span>Building AI Fluency with the AI CARES Model\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty introduced a dedicated AI microcredential focused on the ethical and effective use of generative AI in clinical practice. These tools assess clinical reasoning, communication style, and decision-making logic, offering personalized feedback that highlights strengths and areas for improvement. This approach has proven especially beneficial for learners who struggle with self-assessment, while allowing faculty to focus on coaching rather than basic corrections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microcredentials_That_Matter\"><\/span>Microcredentials That Matter\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty embedded microcredentials throughout the curriculum to recognize emerging competencies. Examples include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/edhub.ama-assn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Opioid and substance use education<\/a> \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Telehealth essentials\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI in clinical reasoning\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These microcredentials give students meaningful milestones that can be shared on resumes or LinkedIn and demonstrate competency in high-demand areas of healthcare.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Meeting_Real-World_Requirements_MATE_Act_DEA_Readiness\"><\/span>Meeting Real-World Requirements: MATE Act &amp; DEA Readiness\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure our students are prepared for licensure and practice, Saint Joseph&#8217;s University aligned its NP curriculum with emerging regulatory requirements. For example, NPs must now complete training under the\u202fMedication<strong> Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act<\/strong> to obtain or renew their DEA registration. Faculty embedded this training into their curriculum through the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edhub.ama-assn.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u202fAMA EdHub<\/a>, ensuring students meet this requirement before graduation.&nbsp;This not only supports compliance but also reinforces our commitment to preparing practice-ready clinicians who are equipped to address the opioid crisis with compassion and evidence-based care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Teaching_RNs_with_Technology\"><\/span>Teaching RNs with Technology\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While our program focuses on advanced practice, many of our tools and strategies are equally impactful for\u202f<strong>registered nurses (RNs)<\/strong>\u2014whether in pre-licensure, RN-to-BSN, or continuing education pathways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a few examples of how we integrate technology into RN education:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Simulated Electronic Health Records (EHR) Faculty have used platforms like<\/strong>\u202fPractice Fusion and\u202fElsevier&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/products\/simchart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SimChart\u00ae<\/a><\/strong> to help students practice documentation, medication reconciliation, and care planning in a realistic digital environment. These tools mirror the workflows of clinical settings and build confidence in EHR navigation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gamified Learning<\/strong>: Inspired by the work of Liz Lucas, EdD, RN, CNE, faculty explored gamification strategies such as digital badges, escape rooms, and case-based quizzes to increase engagement and retention.
