Most of us do not know the necessary process to be accepted by a university. In <strong>Colombia<\/strong>, it&#8217;s not necessary to have an undergraduate degree to study medicine. Since the price varies, in each university, the <strong>medicine program<\/strong> turns out to be the most expensive of all. Costs can exceed the sum of <strong>$25 million Colombian pesos per semester<\/strong> ($6000 &#8211; 7000 USD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the cost, you need to have a <strong>high score on the State test<\/strong> and go through filters like <strong>interviews<\/strong> to be admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, <strong>public universities<\/strong> are much more affordable. The total semester value is not linked to the study program. Instead, the cost varies according to the <strong>economic capacity of each student<\/strong>, measured by various factors, such as the school where the student receives their Bachelor&#8217;s degree or where they live. However, here the major hindering entering public education is the <strong>knowledge tests<\/strong>. Some universities design their own <strong>entrance exam<\/strong>, others are based on previously taken state tests. However, the required scores are even higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>medical degree<\/strong> is one of the most <strong>in-demand programs nationwide<\/strong>, which is why the <strong>highest scores<\/strong> are required on the admission test. <strong>Competition is fierce.<\/strong> For example, when I applied to the <strong>National University of Colombia<\/strong> in 2016, over <strong>12,000 students<\/strong> from all over the country showed up, and there were only <strong>120 places available.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/create\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/2024-09-02T200211.279.png?w=700\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/2024-09-02T200211.279.png 700w, https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/2024-09-02T200211.279.png?resize=300,107 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studying in the country&#8217;s capital, <strong>Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>, introduces many students to people from other parts of the country. In my case, I knew many people from Colombia, and thus was able to learn a little about the <strong>diversity that characterizes the country<\/strong>. This can be a challenge for many students, given that each region has different conditions such as its <strong>climate, clothing, customs, food, and jargon<\/strong> that some have never heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the exception of the <strong>National University of Colombia<\/strong>, which has campuses throughout the country, most <strong>public universities<\/strong> exist in their specific region and are named after the region, such as the <strong>University of the Valley<\/strong> and the <strong>University of Antioquia<\/strong>. Likewise, students are usually from the surrounding area. <strong>Medicine is only taught in the main headquarters<\/strong> located in the capital, either of that region or at the National University in <strong>Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>. I had the opportunity to be\u00a0<strong>a student of two of the three best public universities<\/strong>\u00a0in Colombia to study medicine: Valle&#8217;s University and the National University of Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each college has its strengths. For example, the <strong>Universidad del Valle<\/strong> is characterized by its graduates with great abilities in the field of <strong>public health<\/strong>, being a pioneer in the country. Another forte of the university is in <strong>morphology<\/strong>, since it is one of the universities in which undergraduate students have the possibility of performing <strong>dissections<\/strong>. The <strong>amphitheater<\/strong> has around <strong>20 complete corpses<\/strong> in the morphological pieces (lungs, hearts, kidneys, etc). In addition to having an amphitheater, it also has a <strong>morphology museum<\/strong>, which, thanks to its organization of the pieces and complimentary guides, facilitates learning. At the graduate level, graduates excel in the field of <strong>surgery and trauma<\/strong>. Among its graduates, <strong>Dr. Nubia Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong>, researcher of the <strong>human papillomavirus<\/strong> and candidate for the <strong>Nobel Prize in 2008<\/strong>, stands out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For its part, the <strong>National University of Colombia<\/strong> has greater <strong>research possibilities<\/strong>. There is a wide variety of <strong>molecular research seedbeds<\/strong>, such as <strong>immunology, endocrinology, parasitology<\/strong>, among others, where students can carry out research. It also excels in <strong>emergency medicine, transplants, and geriatrics.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Pontifical Javeriana University<\/strong> has its strength in <strong>oncology<\/strong>, and the students of the <strong>Rosario University<\/strong> are very good in the <strong>history of medicine<\/strong>. In addition, the <strong>University of the Andes<\/strong> has been among the <strong>10 best universities in Latin America<\/strong> over the past seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, as the academic requirement to enter a <strong>public university<\/strong> is very high, so is the <strong>quality.<\/strong> Public universities, despite being only <strong>35% of the country&#8217;s universities<\/strong> as a whole, produce <strong>more scientific products<\/strong> and <strong>more articles published<\/strong> in <strong>international journals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"university-support-for-students\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"University_Support_for_Students\"><\/span>University Support for Students<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Comprehensive accompaniment<\/strong> supports students in <strong>study techniques<\/strong> and <strong>emotional intelligence<\/strong>, <strong>physical activity<\/strong>, <strong>sport<\/strong>, <strong>culture<\/strong>, and <strong>inclusive education<\/strong>. Due to its <strong>expansive, green campus<\/strong>, students can meet for <strong>outside activities<\/strong> and <strong>social interaction<\/strong>, in addition to their academic duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the health area, it offers the availability of <strong>medical appointments<\/strong>, <strong>psychology<\/strong>, <strong>dentistry<\/strong>, among others, at no cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university also offers help in <strong>food, transportation, and accommodation<\/strong> for <strong>low-income students.<\/strong> For students coming from other cities and even countries, there is a wide variety of <strong>studio apartments<\/strong> available for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the <strong>National University<\/strong> is located in a <strong>strategic place<\/strong> within the city, remaining in the <strong>geographic center of Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>, which facilitates <strong>access and arrival to class<\/strong>, despite the usual and considerable traffic jams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fun-facts\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fun_Facts\"><\/span>Fun Facts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>National University<\/strong> is over <strong>150 years old.<\/strong> Its current campus, known as <strong>&#8220;Ciudad Universitaria,&#8221;<\/strong> has a design plan that evokes the figure of the <strong>owl<\/strong>, a symbol of <strong>wisdom and knowledge<\/strong>. Its buildings, typical of <strong>modern and contemporary architecture<\/strong>, represent a high value for the history of the city and the country, being considered one of the <strong>most important projects of the 20th century.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>first female doctor<\/strong> graduated from the National University in <strong>1945.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this <strong>pandemic period<\/strong>, the <strong>admission criteria<\/strong> have been altered. For example, at the <strong>Universidad de los Andes<\/strong>, in the first semester of <strong>2020<\/strong>, the <strong>state tests<\/strong> were canceled due to preventive measures during the <strong>COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong>.
