In this article, <strong>first-year medical student Doris Gasangwa<\/strong> discusses her <strong>dos and don\u2019ts<\/strong> for getting the most out of <strong>summer studying.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Studying during the summer<\/strong> can always be challenging. Friends and family are enjoying the sun and beach and relaxing, and you are trying to review everything you have spent the last couple of months learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have spent my share of summers (and honestly some winter breaks) studying rather than relaxing. In this post, I will highlight some <strong>do\u2019s and don\u2019ts<\/strong> that helped me succeed, and how I am adapting while <strong>distance learning.<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/plans\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_13ab69.png\" alt=\"Osmosis ad\" class=\"wp-image-917\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_13ab69.png 700w, https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/image_13ab69.png?resize=300,107 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_These_Things\"><\/span>Do These Things<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Be protective of your schedule:<\/strong>&nbsp;By this I mean&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/01\/28\/how-to-build-an-osmosis-step-1-study-schedule-for-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">build a schedule<\/a>&nbsp;and stick to it as much as possible. Whether it\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/05\/22\/keeping-myself-grounded-in-routine-during-the-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scheduling every minute of the day<\/a>&nbsp;or creating a daily task list to complete, it\u2019s important to find something that works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Create a study space:<\/strong>\u00a0Having a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/04\/06\/how-to-maintain-productivity-in-the-midst-of-uncertainty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dedicated study area<\/a>\u00a0will really help build the separation that you need in order to put you in a <strong>study mindset<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Be realistic:\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s nice to say that you are going to review 13 lectures and do 100 questions. While breaks are a time to review, they are also a time to <strong>relax and recharge<\/strong>. It\u2019s summer. You\u2019ll want a break. You\u2019ll need a break. You\u2019ll deserve a break. So\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2021\/01\/04\/how-to-set-realistic-goals-for-2021-and-stick-to-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when building a schedule, less is more<\/a>! <strong>Be kind to yourself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Be selfish with your time:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s okay to say \u201cno\u201d to plans! Medical school is stressful, and unfortunately, we miss out on a lot\u2014but we can\u2019t do everything. The most important thing is to <strong>take care of yourself<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say \u201cno\u201d to:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Things that stress you out\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2023\/10\/30\/how-to-build-study-habits-that-last\">Things that divide your focus<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schedule overload<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/05\/18\/overcoming-impostor-syndrome-in-medical-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Too much pressure on yourself<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy stealers and time wasters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list could go on! Someone very wise once told me that it\u2019s okay to say \u201cno,\u201d and later on, it\u2019s always easier to change a \u201cno\u201d into a \u201cyes\u201d than to change a \u201cyes\u201d into a \u201cno.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Take care of yourself emotionally, mentally, and physically:&nbsp;<\/strong>Medical School is a lot! Enjoy the company of those you love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Don&#8217;t cram a term or year\u2019s worth of information into a summer break:\u00a0<\/strong>Focus on the topics that were really challenging for you! There is not enough time to review everything; be selective about what you want to review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Don&#8217;t <\/strong>k<b>eep studying until the new term begins:\u00a0<\/b>By the end of summer, you will have accomplished a lot! Take a week or two to just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.figma.com\/design\/rnekcoDQemnwnWJgxVCTYA\/Osmosis_Website?node-id=507-434&amp;p=f&amp;t=rxdyDjlT78iQzSM1-0\"><strong>relax<\/strong><\/a>. Go see the movies you have missed out on. Meal prep! Whatever it is that brings you joy and calmness; do it! <strong>Recharge<\/strong>, because you are about to start another leg of the medical school marathon.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Don&#8217;t <\/strong>b<strong>e afraid to try new study habits:\u00a0<\/strong>If you notice that your current study style didn\u2019t really work for you, now is the time to try new study habits to help you become more efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Don&#8217;t <\/strong>s<strong>tudy in your pajamas:\u00a0<\/strong>Get up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2020\/05\/20\/why-i-wear-a-tie-every-day-even-though-i-dont-have-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">put on a bra, a tie, or whatever else you&#8217;d wear when you go out<\/a>, and treat it like you are going to campus to study! Well, some of these do\u2019s and dont&#8217;s still apply. <strong>Distance learning<\/strong> definitely has its challenges: You&#8217;re stuck inside, you&#8217;re\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmosis.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/09\/how-to-stick-to-a-strict-study-schedule-in-medical-school-using-osmosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still on a strict schedule<\/a>, and you still have looming exams.
