However, if the regulation of the <strong>scar formation<\/strong> is disrupted, certain abnormal <strong>scars<\/strong> can result such as <strong>hypertrophic<\/strong> and <strong>keloid<\/strong> scars. Both <strong>keloid<\/strong> and <strong>hypertrophic scars<\/strong> share a common pathophysiology related to increased production of <strong>collagen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In wound healing, the <strong>inflammatory phase<\/strong> plays an important role in determining the outcome of the wound as there is a balance in the expression of proinflammatory (e.g. <strong>Interleukin-6<\/strong>) and anti-inflammatory (e.g. <strong>Interleukin-10<\/strong>) <strong>cytokines<\/strong>. A change in the balance between the two may predispose to the formation of <strong>hypertrophic scars<\/strong> and <strong>keloid scars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, <strong>TGF-\u03b2<\/strong> is the mediator that stimulates <strong>fibroblasts<\/strong> to produce <strong>collagen<\/strong>. It is believed that increased expression of <strong>TGF-\u03b2<\/strong> plays an important role in stimulating the <strong>fibroblasts<\/strong> to produce larger amounts of <strong>collagen<\/strong> and leading to <strong>hypertrophic or keloid scars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there are notable differences in both <strong>hypertrophic scars<\/strong> and <strong>keloid scars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hypertrophic scar<\/strong> is contained within the borders of the injury, and may regress with time. Additionally, it is not associated with genetic predisposition. <strong>Hypertrophic scars<\/strong> are more common in areas with more exposure to stretch as it increases the tension on the wound. The major difference between hypertrophic and keloid scars is the <strong>histological appearance<\/strong>. <strong>Hypertrophic scar<\/strong> is characterized by increased production of <strong>collagen<\/strong> (especially <strong>type III<\/strong>) that is arranged in parallel with the dermis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, <strong>keloid scars<\/strong> spread outside the borders of the wound without regression. <strong>Keloid scars<\/strong> are more common in people with <strong>darker skin color<\/strong> and are more prevalent in patients with <strong>African ethnicity<\/strong>. It is also more likely to be seen in <strong>areas with increased tension<\/strong>, but unlike hypertrophic scars, <strong>keloid scars<\/strong> can happen anywhere. The most common locations of <strong>keloid scars<\/strong> are the <strong>earlobes<\/strong>, <strong>face<\/strong>, and <strong>upper extremities<\/strong>. In <strong>histology<\/strong>, <strong>keloid scars<\/strong> are characterized by a massive increase in the production of <strong>collagen type I and III<\/strong> (up to 20 folds than normal scar) and the collagen deposition is arranged in a haphazard way (unlike hypertrophic scar).
