These symptoms include <strong>excessive anxiety and worry along with at least three of the following: restlessness or feeling on edge, fatigue, difficulty concentrating or a mind that goes blank, irritability, muscle tension, or sleep disturbances.<\/strong> <strong>Risk factors include personal or family history of anxiety, prior pregnancy loss, an unplanned or complicated pregnancy, intimate partner violence, or a history of childhood abuse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Perinatal anxiety is a predictor for perinatal depression.<\/strong> Treatment includes <strong>self-care measures such as adequate sleep, exercise, and balanced nutrition.<\/strong> Both <strong>psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are effective first-line treatments<\/strong>, with added benefits when used together. Psychotherapy includes <strong>cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT).<\/strong> The preferred pharmacotherapy is <strong>selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs); sertraline is often preferred, although escitalopram is an acceptable alternative.<\/strong> <strong>Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), such as venlafaxine, can also be used.<\/strong> While <strong>benzodiazepines<\/strong> are often used for anxiety outside of pregnancy, they should be used sparingly in perinatal anxiety and only as a temporary bridge until psychotherapy, SSRIs, or SNRIs take full effect.
