A 52-year-old woman with hypertension presents to the emergency department due to persistent diarrhea and vomiting and one day of generalized weakness and muscle cramps. The patient’s gastrointestinal symptoms started three days ago and several family members have had similar symptoms. The patient has not been able to tolerate much oral intake during this period but has been able to take her daily hydrochlorothiazide dose with a little water.
