In the heart there are contractile cells, which constitute the majority of the heart cells, and which function is to generate the force necessary to pump blood, and conducting cells, which are specialized muscle cells conducting the action potentials generated in the sinoatrial node. They are able to generate action potentials, but this capacity is usually suppressed. They take part of the atrial internodal tracts, the atrioventricular node, the bundle of His and the Purkinje system. The action potentials finally spread from one contractile myocyte to the other, via low-resistance pathways between the cells.
