Acute radiation syndrome is a spectrum of injuries that can occur after exposure to a large dose of ionizing radiation. Symptoms can range from nausea and vomiting to hair loss and death. The severity of symptoms depends on the dose and duration of exposure. A small dose of radiation over a short period may cause only minor symptoms, while a larger dose received over a longer period may result in more serious illness or death.
