Summary

Arthrogryposis is a rare congenital disorder that causes multiple joint contractures. People with arthrogryposis present with abnormal fibrosis of the muscle tissues, which results in muscle shortening around the joints, and thus contractures. The cause of arthrogryposis is not fully understood. It is thought to be due to neurogenic disorders, maternal multiple sclerosis, and genetic mutations.

Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the condition but may include limited range of motion in the joints, joint dislocations, club feet, muscle weakness, and inability to move independently. Diagnosis is mainly through history and physical exams.
