Summary
Degenerative disc disease is a condition that affects the intervertebral discs. These discs are located between the vertebrae (the bones of the spine) and act as cushions between them. The discs help to keep the spine flexible and allow it to move smoothly.
Degenerative disc disease is a gradual process that occurs over time. The discs gradually lose their water content, which makes them less flexible and more likely to tear or rupture. This can cause compression of nerve roots and associated pain, paresthesias, muscle weakness, and loss of deep tendon reflexes.
