Development of the integumentary system
Summary
The integumentary system includes the skin (mainly made of the epidermis and the dermis) and associated glands, hair follicles, and nails. It develops from the ectoderm, mesoderm, and neural crest cells. The ectoderm gives rise to the epidermis and the nails and hair follicles. The mesoderm gives rise to the dermis and the hair follicles. Neural crest cells give rise to melanocytes, the melanin-producing cells in the skin.
