The limbs (arms and legs) develop around the 4th week of gestation. They develop from buds that form along the sides of the body, which start to grow into long, thin structures called "limb buds" in a proximal-to-distal direction. Limb buds consist of a central core of mesenchymal cells, covered with a layer of ectoderm.
