Diphyllobothrium latum
Summary of Diphyllobothrium latum
Diphyllobothrium latum is a cestode (tapeworm) that is better known as the "fish tapeworm". Infection is contracted by ingestion of larvae in raw freshwater fish. It causes chronic malabsorption and competes with vitamin B12 in the intestine, leading to B12 deficiency over time and the appearance of megaloblastic anemia on blood film. Like most other tapeworms, it is treated with praziquantel.
