Free water is distilled water that is free of any solutes. Free water clearance (CH2O) refers to the amount of free water that the kidneys excreted out of the blood plasma per day. Free water is normally filtered at the level of the thick ascending limb and the early distal tubule of a nephron. Measuring free water clearance is one method for assessing the kidney's function.
