A 56-year-old woman comes to the physician’s office due to intermittent bleeding from the right breast for the past several weeks. She has had no recent trauma or unprotected sexual intercourse. Menses occur at regular 28-day intervals and last for 4 days with light flow. The last menstrual cycle was 1 week ago. She does not smoke or use illicit drugs, and she states that she drinks alcohol occasionally. Family history is significant for breast cancer in her mother at age 60. Vitals are within normal limits. Breast examination shows no palpable mass, skin changes or nipple retraction. There is no axillary lymphadenopathy. When pressure is applied to the right breast, reddish-brown fluid is expressed from the nipple. Which of the following histopathologic findings is most likely to be seen on biopsy of this patient’s right breast?
Summary
Intraductal papilloma is a benign tumor arising from the epithelium of the lactiferous breast duct. Symptoms may include breast pain, bloody nipple discharge, and changes in the appearance of the breast.
