Summary

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail that can result in nail disfigurement, pain, and increased risk for underlying soft tissue bacterial infection. Affected nails become thick, yellow, or brittle, and they may have a foul smell. Onychomycosis is commonly caused by a type of fungus called dermatophyte, but it can also be caused by yeasts or molds. The treatment may involve topical or oral antifungals, such as griseofulvin and terbinafine.
