The causative organism of Pneumocystis pneumonia, it is an important human pathogen, particularly among immunocompromised hosts like those with AIDS. TMP-SMX, atovaquone, and pentamidine are used for both prophylaxis and treatment for this fungus, while dapsone is used only for prophylaxis.
