Summary
Rectal prolapse is a condition in which the rectum loses its normal attachments inside the body, allowing it to fall out of its normal position through the anus, thereby turning it inside out. It is most common in the elderly but can occur in all ages, including children. It is more common in older women who have had multiple vaginal deliveries, people with chronic constipation, or other conditions that put pressure on the rectum. Symptoms of rectal prolapse include a mass protruding through the anus after defecation or coughing or sneezing, fecal incontinence, and pain or discomfort in the anus or rectum. Treatment for rectal prolapse involves surgery; diet modifications, and stool softeners.
