Trichinella spiralis
Summary
Trichinella spiralis is a nematode parasite responsible for the disease trichinosis. It is sometimes referred to as the "pork worm" due to it being found commonly in undercooked pork products. Following larval intestinal infection and penetration into the bloodstream, it forms cysts in striated muscle and may cause periorbital edema. Patient presentation is characterized by myalgias, fever, periorbital edema, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Treatment is with bendazoles.
