An 8-year-old boy is brought to the physician's office by his parents due to headaches and difficulty walking. The parents report that he had a viral infection 2 months ago, and since then he has had a mild headache, especially in the morning. They also state that he has become clumsier, and his school performance has declined. His temperature is 37.2°C (99°F), pulse is 84/min, and blood pressure is 121/75 mmHg. Physical examination shows a broad based gait and head bobbing. A horizontal nystagmus is present. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head and spine is obtained and shown below:  


A transverse T1 weighted M R I brain scan shows a hyperintense lesion in the cerebellum. The image also shows parts of the skull, eyes, nose, and brain.
