A 42-year-old man is intubated in the intensive care unit after being involved in a high-speed motor vehicle accident and sustaining burns to greater than 50% of his total body surface area. He undergoes several surgeries including skin grafts and exploratory laparotomy with bowel resection. On the 5th day of admission, he is noted to have worsening abdominal distension and dark stool in the rectal tube.
