A 55-year-old man presents to the emergency department with 2 days of progressive abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. He has not had a bowel movement in 3 days. He has not noticed blood in his stools, or experienced fevers. His past medical history includes hypertension, chronic constipation, and a ventral hernia repair 7 years ago. Temperature is 36.6 ℃ (97.9 ℉), pulse 90/min, respiratory rate 16/min, blood pressure 140/82, and oxygen saturation 100% on room air. On physical examination, his abdomen appears distended, is tympanic to percussion, and tender. High-pitched bowel sounds are heard on auscultation. There is no rebound or guarding. CT demonstrates distended small bowel with 2 transition points. The distal bowel appears collapsed. What is the most likely etiology of this patient's condition?
