Deborah Natwange
Copperbelt University, Zambia
“Being an OMEF has given me the opportunity to interact with healthcare students from all over the world, and industry leaders who have taught me a lot about medical school and leadership. I’ve had the unique opportunity of working on cross-collaborative projects such as a Hackathon, facilitating a webinar to hundreds of med students in my home country Zambia, both of which are exciting for me as the large volume of work in medical school can sometimes make it challenging to find spaces for nurturing your leadership potential. I’m so glad I applied to be a part of this community. I’d do it all over again if I could go back in time.”

What our fellows impact:
- Tarjimly Project with Dr Amin Azzam - A non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of refugees and the efficiency of humanitarian services by eliminating language barriers. They connect volunteer interpreters to refugees needing on-demand translation. OHLI’s have created an assessment instrument for candidate volunteer interpreters to ensure they are sufficiently knowledgeable to help and “do no harm” in health-related encounters.
- Participated in annual Wikipedia-editing courses with Dr Amin Azzam, learning how to improve health-related Wikipedia articles viewed by thousands! Additionally, OHLI’s have created an entirely asynchronous online course for future students to learn these same skills without needing to participate in the synchronous courses.
- Close-captioned videos on the Osmosis YouTube channel into other languages, thereby increasing access for those with limited English proficiency.
