Cyril Phillip: Principal at Providence Ventures (Raise the Line)

Hi, I'm Shui and I'm today on Raise the line. I'm happy, joined by Cyl Phillip, who's a healthcare venture capitalist and principal at Providence Ventures.

I guess the first question I have is just, you know, telling us a bit more about who you are, how you got into healthcare venture investing.

Uh I went into healthcare um through kind of the traditional investment banking world. And so, you know, when I graduated school, um I had a choice of joining an investment banking industry group and I chose healthcare because when I saw the healthcare industry at that time, which was over 10 years ago, I saw it as a space that needed some innovation um and being in investment banking I spent about 4.5 years um at U Bs Investment Bank, um I had a chance to see a lot of the legacy type of companies that existed um at, at that time in health care.

And uh when I left U Bs and moved into the by side, um and eventually to provenance ventures, I really saw an opportunity to be a part of the change that a large health system was going through in terms of finding new and innovative companies and actually implementing them.

Um It's great to be part of such a, a talented team at province ventures, which really enables me to, to work well within a health system and help drive change um albeit sometimes slowly but still driving towards it.

So any other final thoughts from your side? Yeah, I mean, II think I'll in terms of uh the audience here, um which, you know, may, may include a lot of uh younger health professionals, you know, CO COVID was a really um impactful event um for our system and uh for the health care system overall.

And, you know, from a healthcare worker perspective, you know, our workforce at Providence had has done an amazing job in caring for our patients.

Um I highly doubt things will ever return back to any sort of semblance of normal. But um what I do believe is that there's gonna be an increased adoption of new technologies and it's gonna rely a lot on the, the young professionals out there, whether you're in school right now or whether you're just graduating, um, you're gonna be the drivers of change.

Um And we're gonna see a lot of innovation and I've seen it at least in the last month or so in terms of companies having solutions which have uh have not been seen before and having adoption, which I have not been seen before and we're gonna rely on kind of that next generation workforce.

Um and those new uh those new providers to really help guide that change and, and be that um catalyst for growth and industry overall.

So I'm excited to see how it happens. I know you asked me earlier in the podcast around kind of how the last 10 years have, have kind of changed.
