Get to know Osmosis

Hey, thank you all for uh joining this osmosis presentation. My name is Caleb Ferns.
I'm based in Philadelphia. I joined osmosis more than seven years ago when uh Shivan and Ryan were the co founders, took a leave of absence from medical school because they knew there had to be a better in a more efficient way to uh learn medicine.
Uh They sort of had this epiphany themselves in their first year anatomy class. So a lot of the tools and the resources and even the philosophy of what I'm gonna show you is very much boring out of their experience as, as students.
Um So having said that we have half an hour and a packed schedule, I'm gonna try to do about 15 minutes of presentation.
I'm gonna talk at you a little bit. Please bear with me.
But then we're gonna have 15 minutes of uh questions if you guys have any questions or any comments, really, um feel free to put them into the chat.
Now, there will also be time again in that, in that second half uh of our of our half hour meeting for you guys to ask them verbally.
Um to the extent possible. I like to have these um presentations be interactive.
So do feel free and do feel encouraged to um reach out. Um ok, great.
I am going to share my screen and sort of start walking you through osmosis. All right.
So we're taking a peek at osmosis today is November 9th. Again.
Thank you all for uh joining me. Um So as an overview, I like to share our company's mission vision and value.
So as a small company, we created these to sort of help us all have a common direction and a common philosophy about how we work.
I also share it because a lot of um this also overlaps with how we work with our institution, partners, with our faculty, with our administrators and our students in particular.
One of the values that I would like to emphasize is this notion of, of, of opening your arms. And you can see that in the, in the um bottom, right?
What that means to me is that in our work with students in schools, we seek to be accessible and transparent and collaborative and you'll see that I think in the very resources themselves, we are truly trying to make expert, medical education accessible and engaging.
And you can also just see it in the way that we work with our partners. Uh I'm gonna, I'm gonna introduce some of the profiles of the people in our team, both subject matter, experts, academic success managers.
But I just like to highlight the sort of theme of, of, of, of ov opening your arms and of being transparent and accessible and collaborative.
And we'll touch on that a little bit more. All right.
So what is osmosis a quick overdo? So fundamentally osmosis is an integrated video library.
We cover what we consider to be 1700 plus canonical topics across medical and allied health professions, education. This covers everything from basic science to pathophysiology and even clinical practice.
Integrated with these videos, we have digital textbook chapters, we call these high yield notes because they emphasize that things are gonna be most important in clinical settings and in high stakes exams integrated with these videos are practice questions.
Specifically, we have 2500 multiple choice questions that include a vignette that's designed to mimic a clinical scenario.
The intention of these questions, right is to help students um synthesize their knowledge and to make differential diagnosis based on the uh you know, presentations of various diseases.
Um and in that sense, right, we're trying to train future clinicians for clinical practice, but also to give them practice for high stakes exams, which which we all know to determine a lot of of various uh sort of career pathways.
In addition to the multiple choice questions, we have 15,000 flat cards, flashcards are short and discreet. They help students across allied health professions, learn the vocabulary of of medicine and the most atomistic bits, these also lend themselves to space rep rep repetition, which is a learning science technique, which I'll touch on in a little bit.
Right. So supporting educational innovation with osmosis.
So what does that mean? So fundamentally osmosis is rooted in learning science.
Both of the founders had backgrounds in neuroscience and in learning science. And so they built this platform to sort of um tie into learning science best practices.
The main thing that you guys are gonna see is that our videos are chunked. It's, there's a, there's a term for this, it's called content chunking.
And I'll show a little video that gets into it. But basically a major intention of our video library is to make dense content absorbable.
Literally, human beings can only process so much information from their short term to their long term memory and content chunking is a really powerful principle to make that possible.
The second big idea which kind of encapsulates some of these others is we wanna make um testing, enhanced learning really accessible and really easy to do, test enhanced learning space repetition, these outperform more traditional ways of, of studying.
So the prototypical person and this is uh true for me, I would highlight a ad nauseam in my, you know, chemistry textbook.
And I would take, you know, kind of exhaustive notes where I just regurgitated a uh lecture, but in fact, taking practice questions out performs those studying methods.
And so we try to make that really easy. All right.
Um I'll get into more of this a little bit later and I hope ultimately, you guys have conversations with us about how you might use osmosis in your school.
But just know that there's a lot of different ways that you can implement this within your curriculum. Uh at the very sort of easiest, low implementation and effort, sort of scale of things.
You can just provide this to students so that they can supplement what they're seeing in their lectures and do self study, they can watch a video on their own before and after class and answer practice questions.
A and then we have other options as you get into sort of like more deeply integrated sort of uh use cases with your, with uh with your curriculum.
And, and as you put more effort into integrating with osmosis, you can flip your, your classroom, you can move almost all of the didactic content of your school's lectures onto our platform.
So, so for, for example, some of our successful partners will have their students watch a video about myocardial infarction before the lecture on that same topic.
And then they'll have their students have sort of more interactive classroom sessions uh to make use of that. Um what we find and again, what the learning science um points out pretty um persuasively is that having your in class sessions be more interactive, be a team based learning problem based learning um is that it's more engaging and it's more active for, for students and that also helps difficult content stick in their brains.
Um So these are just some of the ways that you guys can think about using osmosis. We'll touch on this as we look through some of the platform itself.
Uh Here's a quick screen grab of the analytics that are available on our platform. Again, the sort of old model of medical education is that you lecture, lecture lecture, you have six months of it, six weeks, a module, what, what have you.
And then at the end, you have one summit of exam where you get a insight into how your students performed. The the new model.
Again, based on the learning science is that you wanna help students do continuous formative self assessment, this helps them study, but it also gives you the, the um insight into how they're performing, how they're grasping content and really what they're engaging with.
And so in that way, we're really trying to make medical education be more um contemporaneous and more useful to you as instructors as faculty.
You can start seeing what your students are doing independently and where they're struggling. Uh Here's just like another look at some of the um data available to you.
This uh is just looking at student performance on practice questions. And again, you wanna sort of start helping your students build confidence, build mastery and these uh metrics around accuracy and confidence are sort of two indicators of that.
All right. So let's um jump to the last slide here.
So uh my sort of one call to action for all of you guys. Um This is just the beginning of a conversation.
We are truly just trying to give you a sense of what osmosis can do, what some of the resources look like. We would love to keep having this conversation with you and your colleagues.

All right. So let's take a peek at osmosis itself.
Um I am going to enlarge this and I get out of here. All right.
So here is the home screen of osmosis. Um Again, the look and feel of this is the aim here again, is, is to be accessible, is to make medical content, easier to find, easier to, to use.
So here's a search bar. This looks like truly anything.
Uh This looks like any number of search bars that any of us use on the uh internet, you can search for any topic, all search for heart disease and pull up um various results.
And in this sense, we're really just trying to mimic the sort of user experiences that, that, that all young people and all individual students all already use.
Um on the internet. Uh A quick thing that I'd like to point out which again, I think makes us unique and is something that you guys can really leverage as faculty is our learning science library.
Um m many students, many faculty, you know, um don't necessarily get training or get a review about learning science and this is really critical, right?
Because we want to train tomorrow's clinicians to be lifelong learners and to really do some of this work efficiently, we all know that burnout is a challenge.
Um you know, efficiency is a challenge as the amount of content is um you know, keeps expanding and keeps growing. Uh Here's a quick video from our library just about how you might apply multimedia design principles to a powerpoint slide.
This again gets to this basic idea of content shuning. It's a very simple idea.
The the challenge right is that medical content is for both, it's dense and it's overly complex and there's two little times who will learn it.
This is a challenge for both students and and faculty. An approach that problem is to chunk content to make it really discrete audiovisual and engaging.
Uh I have the volume off in this video um just so that I can speak over it. But we're applying these principles to a powerpoint side, but the same principles apply to all the content which we cover in our videos.
Again, we're trying to sort of address the challenge of students and faculty being overwhelmed with, with content by chunking it and making it memorable and engaging.
And if you can do this across the breath of your curriculum, right? In our case, that's about 1700 topics, you're gonna improve the degree which any individual student can grasp d difficult content.
You're also gonna lessen the burden of faculty to synthesize and to update and to prepare for these lectures, right? So you can move a ton of your didactic content onto a platform like like ours free up faculty time to do more intense, more engaging, more sort of like diverse in class activities around problem based learning and, and like uh you know, you know, and it's, and it's worth saying, right, that we're training students, right?
Both to be experts in pathophysiology, to know the mechanisms of disease. But we're also trying to train them to be holistic clinicians, right, the kind of clinician that you would like your, your your parent to go see.
And what we like to sort of emphasize is that these tools and these resources on osmosis helps you guys as, as educators simplify and make efficient some of this hard core content coverage so that you can do this more expansive project of medical education.
Um And we have whole sections of our library that are devoted to this sort of more holistic approach to educating the clinicians of tomorrow.
You know, we have libraries on interpersonal and communication skills, things about COVID. Uh and even just things uh to sort of make medical education more fun.
And again, getting back to this sort of theme of accessibility. Um Great.
So here, that's all like really nice background. Let's look a at a little bit of content itself.
I'm gonna open up our anatomy library and um I am going to look at one of our um clinical correlates videos. Um And so here's a, here's a nice video that both, you know, traces, you know, the anatomical structures in the thorax in this case to sort of like clinical applications of this content.
I'll play a little bit of the um sound here just so you can get a sense. It's about the mediastinum, which is the area between the two lungs where the heart actually sits.
The mediastinum doesn't just house the heart but many important structures in the. Th anyway, the voiceovers are wonderful.
We have a an entire team of people who just specialize in voiceover narration again, to make this content absorbable, to sort of pair with this chunking to make content easier again, to move from one short term memory to the to the long term memory, uh just a few features of these learn pages to to know every concept in our platform has a unique URL which can be shared in almost any medium.
Be be it a word doc an email A L MS again, getting back to this idea about accessibility, we're really trying to make our content be as user friendly as possible.
And so, you know, that means different things for different faculty. But just know that every single concept, all 1700 concepts have a have a URL that can be shared with, with students and also added to playlists as you start curating your own uh resources for future use.
Um We just recently added Spanish translations for so for those among you in the audience who um who also speak Spanish, just know that we have a Spanish version which includes translated subtitles and also translated transcripts.
Um So in addition to the video and some basic like video player controls, chapter and closed captions, speed controls, we have uh recommended playlists to the right.
Um I'm gonna restart this video and we also have a tool for students to take individual notes that are time stamped to that point in the video.
So timestamps are a cool way for students to review content and to know where it came up, just add that note right now. Uh In addition, we also have transcripts, this is a great way for faculty and students to get an overall sense of what's being covered in a given uh video.
Um What I'd like to do here too is just to um take a dip into some of the people who work on this team. And again, getting back to this idea of sort of opening our eyes and being a collaborative um enterprise, um I of course, lost that link.
So the, this is Viviana, she's one of the subject matter experts on our content team and we have a whole cadre of, of people.
Um These are led by Rishi who's our chief medical officer, he's an infectious disease pediatrician from Stanford and actually worked at the, at the Khan Academy before coming over to osmosis.
Um But just know that we have a team of medical and subject matter experts who work in this content who review it regularly and who are always looking for ways to, to improve it.
This includes nursing content. Here's my colleague, uh Liz Lucas who who has help build out our nursing library.
Um In addition to the subject matter experts, we have um academic success managers and their team. Um These people help you guys figure out what content is gonna work best for your curriculum.
So for instance, you guys can send us a syllabus, you could even do it today. You can send us a syllabus and we will sort of provide you some recommendations for topics in our library.
That, that are gonna match with your learning objectives. II highlight this just to show you guys that we're both a technology company, but we're also very much a people company and a collaboration company.
Um And just know that uh all of the institutional partners that we work with, get um get, get paired up with an academic success manager to help them make use of this platform and also our sort of wider consulting services.
Um So getting back to the Learn page itself, um we have a video tools uh to the right, we have the ability to make a playlist and the fly from, from any learn page and we have transcripts there.
Um The other big sort of component of osmosis are the practice questions. So let's just look at a couple of these.
So um we actually have um a whole team that just looks at our at our practice questions to make these as useful as possible for preparing for high six exams.
Every single question has major takeaways and explanations for correct and incorrect answers. Again, getting back to this idea of continuous formative self assessment, you want your students ideally from a learning science perspective to get immediate feedback about what they got, right, what they got wrong, but more importantly why they got it right and what they got wrong, all of this content sits on the same video library so that students can jump back into basic um science content where appropriate to review information.
Here's one of those high yield notes or our, our digital textbook chapters. Um Again, we're trying to make it easy for students, given their predilections, given their preferences to work with different kind of mediums.
Uh You know, we like to say that osmosis is multi modal, you know, every student has different preferences and even over their learning journey, they might eventually wanna scribble some notes on a, on a printout of a of a high yield note.
So we just try to make that as easy as possible. Um And um that's what a question looks like.
Um Again, sort of getting back to a couple of like bigger ideas about why osmosis content is so good. Um And so um powerful, one thing I like to show is um is our youtube channel.
So a very a small subset of our video library, we make free and open access on youtube. And you'll notice that we have 2.61 million subscribers throughout the world who have independently elected to follow our videos.
And I think that this is one of the most powerful ways we ossa to um just sort of like prove to you guys the power of some of these learning science principles in our videos, right?
Like people are voluntarily coming to our content to, you know, learn difficult medical concepts, these can be patients and also caregivers, but it's mostly students.
And I think that this is very much sort of like proof of some of the learning science principles that we looked at before.
Here's another cool page and Chantelle can maybe can put some of these links in the chat from now. We'll also distribute them uh with, with the recording.
But um we have people all over the world who have used this platform. So here's a cool page where you can see individual sort of like student testimonials from, from students all over the world who have, who have used our platform on osmosis.org or our fully accessible youtube channels.
And again, we're making medical education easier for real students everywhere all the time. Um All right, one last thing, I'm just gonna show you just so that you know it exists, it's is the analytics dashboard.
So you can get to it from any page on osmosis. Um I have actually loaded um loaded a demo cohort right here.
Just know that you guys as faculty can run reports across individual learned pages for all of the students in your university.
And again, this gives you guys a really good opportunity to get early insight into what content your students are engaging with and also how they're performing on practice, questions related to that content.
Again, the aim here is just to, to is just to, to, to provide transparency in the learn into the learning journey of, of your students.
Um Great. So there are more tools and resources that I have time to go into today.
But I hope this gives you guys a sense of what's possible with osmosis and what some of the challenges are that we're hoping to, to address.

Um uh We have a comment from me and I love uh I'm a med student and I love using osmosis and severe in my medical studies.
And the thing I wanted to know that my US is that my university has an agreement with severe so I can use the resources without any payment and because osmosis is from severe, should I still pay?
Can you give a bit of knowledge around that? Thank you for your consideration.
Hey, thanks for that. Yeah.
So basically, um each uh product in the, in the Elvir Suite requires an institutional agreement between the school and, and between Elvir.
So what I would say is um is, is have a faculty member or dean at your school, contact their representative from Elvir to explore getting osmosis added to your institutional package.
Um I hope that helps with that question. Um Let's see, we don't have any other uh questions there.
Um And we Chantelle is asking you um do we have books on dentistry. Yeah.
Um, we do have um a product devoted to um dentistry. A lot of the video library is, in fact, um overlaps with our medical education product, you know, because a lot of the pathophysiology, a lot of the anatomy obviously is, is the uh same.
Um I also just wanna shout out that we have an entirely new nursing library that is, you know, just like our medical education library, which, which we looked at previously, um you know, focuses on, you know, basic science pathology, but it's scoped for the practice areas of a prelicensure nurse.
So, so if any of you in the audience have an interest or a program interest in nursing, um please do get in touch about that.
We didn't even go into the nursing library in this session because we didn't have time. Just know that it uses many of the same principles.
There are practice questions tied into every video and it's a great way for nursing students to start using some of these same um you know, uh evidence based techniques to improve uh their educational performance.
Um Great. Uh Melanie has a comment, the high yield notes are great, but I often end up um going down a host of uh Rabbit Notes.
Is there a way to see all high yield notes in one place via chapters? Um Mellie, you know, that's a great point and that's something that we periodically look at with our, with our product team.
Um at, at one point, in fact, when we, in the first couple of years of our start up, we actually collected all of the textbook chapters into physical textbooks, which you could order on demand.
Um But the logistics frankly were too difficult. And so now they are interspersed with individual, um with individual learned pages, what I would suggest, Melanie.
Um If, if you wanna look at a bunch of high yield notes, I would actually make a playlist out of those related topics. It's not a perfect solution, you know, and it's not exactly what you're asking for, but that would provide you an easy way to sort of group the high yield notes in ways that are useful to you and that you can um access uh pretty, pretty easily.
Uh But, but great question and that's something that, that we're still playing around with. Um And, and, you know, one of the cool things about working with, uh with a company like ours, which is a technology company is that we are always iterating on the product and we, you know, can do it pretty quickly.
And so we're always ii improving the user experience around things like like high yield notes. But thanks for that.

Um I think there's another question in the chat. Oh, great.
Um Is osmosis a tool that faculty usually pay for subscriptions to or do institutions usually subscribe via their, their library?
It seems like more of a teaching and learning resource that faculty would uh pay for. Um Yeah, so it's a question.
So, so fundamentally osmosis can be purchased by individuals, you know, via our, our retail site. There's a and I don't know if Chantelle wants to put that, that link in there.
So that, so that link is osmosis.org/plans. That's our retail site.
So any given faculty member or student can um can purchase and provision an individual account there. Um in order for an end user to use the videos to use this this platform, they have to have an an active membership.
Um So, um so even if a faculty member, you know, purchases osmosis and uh you know, and, and has an account, if they wanna share a link to a student, that student has to have an active membership to open that, that link on their own machine.
And for that reason, we partner with schools for them to buy institutional licenses to osmosis. Um Typically, what, what we do is um provide a site license to, to an entire program or school so that every user be it a student or a faculty member can have full access to osmosis and create an individualized account.
Um It's, it's worth noting that um you know, every account on osmosis is individualized and unique to a user so that it retains their user data and their record of all the videos that they've ever watched, they can also build their own customized space repetition algorithm for um continuous formative assessment.
And so in that way, this this resource might look and feel a little bit different from some of the library resources that are used to, that are maybe proxy based um or that, or that use a uh A IP address.
Um we aren't just like a digital textbook in the sky that is indifferent to your, to your person, to your learning journey, right?
We are, we provide individualized accounts that sort of hold all of, of your performance history and your um and your space repetition data.
Um Great. There's another um question here that Chantelle is reposting.
Hi. Do you have any materials, videos about practical skills in medicine, like measuring BP, et cetera?
Um Yeah. And so like the short version um to the question is, is yes, you'll sort of see them scattered around um different parts of our product.
I know that our nursing um product in particular goes into a lot of sort of like clinical skills around um you know, um you know, using a ventilator ec C GS things of that nature.
Um Over time, we're actually building out our clinical skills library. Um because because as many of you probably know more and more sort of like clinical applications of science is being moved um earlier into the curriculum and is even even just being like a point of emphasis.
So you'll see additional resources added there. Um Again, this isn't a static platform.
We are, we are always, you know, updating it and, and because we're posted in the cloud, all this stuff can be um updated and released in almost real time.
