We’ve discussed learning styles before, but Studying Styles can transform the way you work with material and prepare for exams. Read on for the definitive guide to identifying your Studying Style and putting it to work for you.

What are Studying Styles?

Have you found yourself spending more time planning your study session than actually hitting the books? Or, perhaps, you jump right in and seek out practice exams first. When you sit down to study, are you looking to absorb the material permanently, or is it good enough to simply pass the exam?

If you found yourself nodding along to one or another of these study-time descriptions, you’re on your way to finding your particular Studying Style. The idea is that each person approaches studying medicine in one of four different ways.

You may have heard the term “learning style” before, and might know that learning styles fit into about seven different categories:

  • Visual: people who learn by seeing the concept
  • Aural: people who learn by hearing about the concept
  • Verbal: people who learn by speaking and writing about concepts
  • Kinesthetic: people who learn by hands-on practice
  • Mathematical: people who learning through logical progression
  • Social: people who learn best by working with others
  • Solitary: people who learn best by working alone

The theory of learning styles is prevalent especially in challenging academic environments like when studying healthcare. However, many studies show that most of us don’t necessarily fit into one category or the other. Trying to identify your specific learning style won’t automatically help you learn easier or more efficiently.

Studying Styles differ from learning styles by providing learners the tools to identify their own strengths and challenges. Once you’ve found those, Studying Styles help you capitalize on your strengths and provide methods to overcome the challenges. Note that your Studying Style might change based on the professor, the specific class you’re taking, or the exam you’re preparing for!

Osmosis has identified four main study personas
