Welcome back to our Ask-a-Nurse corner! One of our learners asked, “Do you believe new grad nurses should work on a medical-surgical floor?” Osmosis Senior Nursing Content Manager, Liz Lucas, shares her insights on choosing the right path for you after graduating from nursing school.

It is pretty common for nursing students to hear that a medical-surgical unit is the best place to start after graduation. And it really is a wonderful first nursing job, because you have the opportunity to work with clients who have a very wide variety of conditions and you will learn so much.

But don’t feel like that MUST be your first job! My favorite thing about the career of nursing is just how incredibly diverse it is. So if you are drawn to oncology or pediatrics or the ICU or outpatient settings, like dialysis or dermatology, then go for it! There is no wrong way to start your nursing journey.
