Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors are medications primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus, and have an unlabeled use for type 1 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to insulin.
Now, type 2 diabetes mellitus is characterized by insulin resistance, which is when tissue cells have trouble responding to insulin to use glucose from the blood, while in type 1 diabetes mellitus, there’s no insulin at all.

Lastly, if your client is taking acarbose along with another oral antidiabetic medication, the risk for hypoglycemia is increased, so teach them to recognize signs of hypoglycemia, such as hunger, headache, fatigue, tremors, dizziness, and confusion.
If these symptoms occur, instruct your client to check their glucose; remind them that because their medication prevents the breakdown of sucrose, they will need to take oral glucose tablets to raise their glucose level to normal levels.
