How the Osmosis Clinical Sciences Library Supports Educators and Students More Effectively

,

In today’s Osmosis blog, we’re introducing educators to the Osmosis Clinical Sciences library, a new and valuable resource during the transition to clinical rotations. Discover how our new content fosters engaged and effective learning.

As medical students transition from preclinical studies into their clinical years in medical school, they begin to practice hands-on patient care. This significant shift calls for both students and educators to properly prepare with a variety of helpful tools and resources.

To support that change, we’ve developed the Osmosis Clinical Sciences library. Designed with clinical rotations in mind, our new collection includes hundreds of clinically focused, visually engaging videos, evidence-based decision-making trees, and board-style assessments designed to help students learn how to make informed clinical decisions and excel during rotations and lectures.

The Osmosis Clinical Sciences content is written and reviewed by experts in each medical specialty to help students focus on what’s important during their core clerkships. Educators can use the Osmosis Clinical Sciences library to enhance the traditional lecture delivery using a combination of problem-based learning techniques found to be effective in learning and teaching medical education.

How is the Clinical Sciences library beneficial for student learning?

The Osmosis Clinical Sciences content equips students with the knowledge and confidence necessary to succeed while they balance clinical rotations, attending lectures, and studying for classes and exams. Faculty can use this resource to support their curriculum while encouraging students to learn and test their knowledge in an engaging way.

Decision-Making Trees

Clinical algorithms use evidence-based guidelines to create an organized, easy-to-understand way to make informed decisions or quickly review information.

Board-Style Assessments

Beneficial for testing and solidifying knowledge for clinicals, Shelf exams, and the USMLE® Step 2 and COMLEX-USA® Level 2 exams.

Clinically Focused Videos

There are three types of videos found in the Osmosis Clinical Sciences library:

  1. Approach to Presentation videos guide students through the management of patient care with a specific presentation that includes signs and symptoms, laboratory findings, and differential diagnoses. Each video also guides students through how to use the patient history, physical examination findings, and diagnostic interventions to clinically reason and deduce the appropriate diagnosis.
  2. Approach to Disease videos include a review of the pathophysiology of each disease and the history, physical exam findings, proper diagnostic investigations, and patient management.
  3. Health Promotion and Preventative Health videos with topics coming soon (e.g., Cardiovascular disease screening: Clinical sciences).

How can I access the Clinical Sciences library on Osmosis?

The Clinical Sciences library is listed in the Osmosis platform by specialty, so students and educators can easily find information relevant to each core clerkship. What makes the Osmosis Clinical Sciences content special?

Evidence-based education

As with all Osmosis content, our visually engaging content honors well-established multimedia design principles to enhance student learning. With an average playtime of 10 minutes, the new Clinical Sciences videos are even more tightly focused and chunk content into small units to manage cognitive load.

Emphasis on clinical decision-making

New Clinical Sciences videos describe either the approach to presentation (e.g., chest pain) or the approach to disease (e.g., acute coronary syndrome) to help students think clinically. From forming a differential diagnosis and getting to the proper diagnosis to formulating an evidence-based management plan, the Osmosis Clinical Sciences library supports longitudinal knowledge formation.

Interconnected, scaffolded content

Connecting and integrating Clinical Sciences content with basic sciences prepares students for exams and patient care while reinforcing preclinical knowledge to ensure students maintain a strong base as they continue to learn new material.

Evidence-based practice enhancement

Externally-linked evidence-based guidelines help build the foundational skills of utilizing evidence-based medicine in their clinical practice and emphasize the importance of lifelong learning.

Curricular alignment support

Visible learning objectives illuminate the primary learning goals for each video, support curriculum alignment, and keep students on track.

Conclusion

The Osmosis team strives to make learning medicine engaging, concise, and enjoyable. The new Clinical Sciences library is an excellent resource, serving both faculty by supporting in-class work and students as they review a patient’s pathology or deep dive into their studies.
