In March 2020 it became frighteningly clear that COVID-19 was going to have an unprecedented impact on our healthcare system, educational institutions, government, and society.
Eager to help, the Osmosis team worked tirelessly to create educational videos that have been seen millions of times, a continuing-education course taken by over 100,000 people, and even this catchy song and music video to promote public health education and awareness. We also began focusing on ways in which we could help “Raise the Line” – or strengthening our healthcare system – during and after the pandemic. It was through this last idea that a podcast series was born.
With a little help from our friends
We are in a privileged position to know and work with many of the world’s leaders in healthcare and technology, public health officials and other influential figures. We invited some of them to join us on the Raise the Line podcast to share ideas, stories and insights with our listeners.
Our first episode featured the former Director of the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Dr. Tom Frieden. Just over 2 years later we celebrated our 300th episode featuring Dr. Sheila Davis, who began her nursing career on the front–lines of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and now serves as the CEO of the leading global health organization Partners in Health.

Giving airtime to the purposeful work of our colleagues, customers and communities
In over 150 hours, 300 episodes and 1.7 million words spoken, Osmosis’s Raise the Line podcast has highlighted the healthcare-improving insights of incredible guests including:
- Influential global leaders such as Mark Cuban (founder of CostPlus Drug Company), Arianna Huffington (founder of Thrive Global), Chelsea Clinton, Ashish Jha (White House COVID-19 Coordinator), and Elizabeth Iro (Chief Nursing Officer at the World Health Organization).
- Dedicated colleagues at Elsevier who are engaged in purposeful work every day for the benefit of every patient, including Jan Herzhoff, Elizabeth Munn, Josh Schoeller, Kevonne Holloway, Brent Gordon, and YS Chi.
- Patients and advocates of those with rare disorders (known as “zebras”) – an impactful focus area of Osmosis – such as Dr. Edward Neilan and Rebecca Aune of the National Organization for Rare Disorders, Philippe Pakter of Pierre Robin Europe (whom our CEO Kumsal Bayazit put us in touch with), Dr. Tom Rebbecchi of the GLut1 Deficiency Foundation, and Suzanne Peek of the National MALS Foundation.

Raise the Line has also provided a natural forum from which dozens of new and repeat business opportunities have resulted. For example, after Arianna Huffington appeared on our podcast, she and her team at Thrive Global invited Osmosis to partner with them and the Johnson & Johnson Foundation to create a continuing education course on nursing resilience (read her LinkedIn announcement), contributing to the goal of “Raising the Line” and helping Osmosis grow with a 6-figure contract.
Similarly, we’ve also featured a wide range of dedicated partners including:
- Dr. Garth Graham of YouTube Health, which tapped Osmosis to take on the infodemic
- Anne Wojcicki, the CEO of 23andMe, with whom we’ve developed a genetics course, and
- Dozens of medical & nursing school leaders, such as Dr. LouAnn Woodward of UMiss and Dr. Steve Riley of Cardiff University

We’re very proud of the positive impact theRaise the Line podcast has made. Audience engagement in the form of tens of thousands of downloads and our outstanding 4.9 out of 5 rating makes our purposeful work all worth it.

A sound team effort
None of this would have been possible without the exemplary work of our co-host and producer, Michael Carresse, and our project manager, Michele Zeiser who have already been asked by colleagues across Elsevier to provide support on their podcasts and content as a whole. We’d also like to thank our video producers Rachel Yancey and Gil McIntire; people & experience team including Lianne Yulay, Lindsey Smith, and Hillary Acer; creative & marketing teammates including Jillian Dunbar, Brittany Norton, Diana Stanley, Meagan Hardcastle, and Riley Stanton; former hosts Rishi Desai and Jannah Amiel; and former project managers Max Harris and Michele Li.
We welcome you to reach out if you would like to work with us to broadcast a current or prospective partner’s work, to generate ideas around your own podcast and content goals, and of course to listen to Raise the Line on your favorite podcasting platform!
