What’s Been Happening at Osmosis from Elsevier

We’re beyond excited about the impact we’re making as part of the Elsevier portfolio. In collaboration with Elsevier’s exceptional teams, resources, and expertise, we’ve been able to imagine and do more. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights!

  • We launched our new Clinical Sciences library in September, releasing content for Internal Medicine and Surgery, with OBGYN and Pediatrics content launching in early 2024, and Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, and Family Medicine arriving in time for back-to-university in the fall of 2024. Note that a variety of topics are being released as they’re produced, so take a peek now!
  • Our nursing content team worked with the Elsevier Nursing Health Education team to curate and develop more than 300 videos to integrate into Sherpath and Sherpath Vantage products. (Please note: Sherpath subscribers can access select Osmosis videos, but not all.)
  • We launched Osmosis in Spanish on our web and mobile platforms! Learners can experience the Osmosis site and apps along with video captions and transcripts for our Basic Science videos.
  • We’ve integrated select Osmosis content within the Elsevier ClinicalKey Student (CKS) product to enhance the overall educational experience for our learners.
  • Our team was awarded Pendo’s Customer Experience Award during their Pendomonium event for providing enhanced customer onboarding experiences.
  • We now provide different packages on our Plans pages to better fit our learners’ needs. (Let us know what you think!)

Our New Clinical Sciences Library

Designed to align with core clerkship curricula by experts in each specialty and based on the latest clinical guidelines, our new Clinical Sciences library prepares learners for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients. Expertly scoped for the first-time clinical learner, this new library is designed to help students think clinically from day one to patient one with new, visually engaging videos, clinical decision-making trees, and linked board-style assessment items that cover the core rotations.

Throughout the coming year, the library’s content will expand from Internal Medicine and Surgery to cover eight specialties and is organized to support a seamless learning progression from the basic sciences to clinical rotations. And this content isn’t just for medical students! We’ve also reorganized the Nurse Practitioner (NP) content to align with population foci and other specific curriculum requirements, ranging from tailored question banks to exam preparation and practice, along with creating new PANCE-style questions for PAs.

Celebrating Three Million Followers on YouTube

We’re happy to announce that Osmosis from Elsevier’s YouTube channel has reached three million subscribers! Beyond being an important milestone, this achievement is compelling evidence that our vibrant community of learners is expanding, bringing us closer to the ambitious goal of educating one billion people by 2025.

Expanding Our Global Footprint

Initiated in 2022, we’re expanding our offerings for Australia/New Zealand nursing students. Local experts have curated content across core subject areas to align with the Australian/New Zealander nursing curriculum, with specialized navigation and curated video playlists.

We’re also pleased to share that with Elsevier’s resources and expertise, we’ve translated Osmosis into Spanish, allowing learners to toggle between languages and making it more accessible to more learners than ever before. Our initial release in late 2022 provided Spanish language options for Learn Page transcripts and captions. Now available on the mobile app as well as the web, translations include titles, navigation, playlists, and questions. Medical students, aspiring nurse practitioners, and learners from other health professions can now experience Osmosis from Elsevier in Spanish across the platform, including translations for over two thousand questions!

Catching Up with Our Nursing Team

It’s been another incredibly productive year for our Nursing team! In addition to curating Clinical Sciences content for the Nurse Practitioner product, they’ve helped launch a nursing product tailored for nursing students in Australia-New Zealand, co-hosted ten webinars, and added more than 350 new questions to the Osmosis nursing product!

In 2024, they’ll produce over one hundred videos, including case study-type videos with NCLEX-style assessment items for the RN product, launch a product tailored for nursing students in the UK, collaborate with the Clinical Sciences team to develop content for the MD, PA, and NP products, and continue to explore content development opportunities across Elsevier.

Empowering All Learners

Being consciously equitable, diverse, and inclusive is essential for better patient care. It also helps to foster a workplace where diverse perspectives are valued, dismantling barriers is expected, and promoting a culture of respect is a core value. By incorporating equity, diversity, and inclusion content into the Osmosis platform and blog, we’re actively working toward creating an environment where everyone feels heard and empowered. To that end, here’s a selection of our most recent equity, diversity, and inclusion articles:

Year of the Zebra: Raising awareness of rare diseases 2023

Looking Back at the Year of the Zebra

Developed to mark the 40th anniversary of the Orphan Drug Act, the Year of the Zebra initiative showcases impactful educational content about a wide range of rare disorders. With the goal to teach millions of current and future healthcare professionals, caregivers, researchers, patients, family members, and the public, we invite you to explore these rare conditions in gripping video testimonials with firsthand stories from individuals like Kellie White, who discovered her Zebra condition during an annual eye exam, and Becca Peach, who passionately advocates for her rare condition, VHL. These narratives offer a glimpse into the daily struggles of individuals dealing with rare diseases, making the Year of the Zebra all the more impactful. Last but not least, Elsevier launched Rare, a new open journal, to help develop and share cutting-edge rare disease content worldwide. (Note: there’s still time to submit an article!)

Expansion of the Osmosis Community Program

The Osmosis from Elsevier student community programs have experienced remarkable growth in 2023, expanding to over 200 students from 45 countries around the world. In the fall of this year, we welcomed the addition of PA and dental students to the program. Our community program aims to grow, engage, and develop a team of student leaders to advance our mission of empowering clinicians and caregivers globally with the best learning experience possible. To that end, in 2023, our community referred 15,000+ colleagues to Osmosis and orchestrated another 330 student-led events at their respective educational institutions, along with student leaders joining live panels and focus groups to share valuable feedback and improve the Osmosis platform. We’re proud to share that OHLI, OMEF, and ONSA members have written blog articles on a variety of topics ranging from disaster relief to artificial intelligence in healthcare, with a student-written blog on active recall leading the way.
