The exocrine pancreas is the aspect of the organ that is involved with digestion. It secretes an aqueous component that is rich in bicarbonate to neutralize the chyme from the stomach. The aqueous solution is also rich in enzymes that digest carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins into particles destined for absorption in the small intestine.
